About the APL Forge
Enhancing APL Awareness and Innovation
The APL Forge is an annual competition to enhance awareness and usage of APL in the community at large. We want to accomplish this both directly by boosting the writing of APL code and indirectly by enhancing the experience of everyone from newcomers to professionals.
Therefore, the APL Forge has two overarching categories which you can compete in:
- The APL category: open-source libraries, potential commercial applications/tools, or modules that add functionality written primarily in APL.
- The non-APL category: Auxiliary tools, plugins, applications, media, websites, or services that enhance the experience of using APL not written primarily in APL.
The APL Category
Submissions can be open-source libraries, potential commercial applications/tools, or modules that add functionality written primarily in APL:
- Libraries could solve day-to-day problems with equations from specific scientific areas, for example, a library to calculate acceleration of an object based on mass and other relevant factors in the environment. Although such tools might not be something that people want to pay for, they could help to expand the usage of APL within a certain scientific field.
- Potential commercial applications should provide solutions to problems that people are willing to pay money for. The commercial value will not impact the judging.
- Modules are plug-ins or add-ons to existing libraries or applications, providing distinct additional functionality.
The Non-APL Category
Submissions can be auxiliary tools, plugins, applications, media, websites, or services that enhance the experience of using APL not written primarily in APL:
- An auxiliary tool or plugin could help with connecting APL to certain resources, platforms or languages
- A website could organize APL-related information
- A service could provide help when developing APL code
- Media includes books, video and podcast series, etc.
Prizes
After the deadline has passed, the APL Forge judging committee will assess each submission and award one or more of them a prize. The submissions will compete against other submissions in the same category. Each prize comprises:
- Assistance from us to help you take your application into production if relevant.
- £2,500 GBP.
- An expenses-paid opportunity to present your winning work at our next user meeting.
- A commercial licence, valid for one year.
