Need inspiration?
Not sure what to build? You’re not alone – this is often the biggest blocker. Below are ideas that have been suggested by the APL community, ranging from quick weekend projects to more ambitious multi-week builds. Pick one, adapt it, or use it as a jumping-off point for something entirely your own.
Remember: you don’t need to fully solve the problem. A working proof of concept is a valid entry.
Approachable starting points
good for a weekend or two
- A tool that takes a URL and extracts its HTML tables in a format suitable for further APL processing
- A GUI for configuring ⎕CSV import/export options, with a preview and generated APL expression
- A zip file library wrapping 219⌶
- A basic authentication/authorisation module for a Jarvis/MiServer/DUI website
- Solving Sudoku with backtracking
More ambitious projects
for those with more APL experience or time
- NumPy in APL: a namespace implementing NumPy’s core members in APL
- A library for 2D game rendering based on the Pixel Game Engine
- A layer for a Jarvis/MiServer/DUI website to communicate with a backend database
- A CI/CD system, similar to Jenkins or GitHub Actions
- BusyBox for the APL interpreter: a library of comfortable CLI-style utilities for interactive sessions
- Library of Combinators
- Mesh generation using quadtrees
- Finite element analysis
- 3D printer support
- RISC-V CPU emulator
Non-APL Ideas
tools, content, or resources that support the use or learning of APL
- An Android IDE — a mobile development environment for writing and running APL on Android
- A video lecture series — covering a specialised domain using APL, with a companion code repository
- A language bridge — connecting Dyalog APL to another programming language or ecosystem
- A cover for a third-party statistics library — making a popular stats library accessible from APL
- An extension to EWC — adding new functionality to Dyalog’s Enterprise Web Components
- A new frontend for TryAPL — an improved online REPL experience for learning and experimenting with APL (note: a similar project won the 2026 non-APL category, so think about what could go further)
- An APL syntax highlighter — for a popular editor or platform not yet supported
- A beginner’s interactive tutorial — a self-guided, browser-based introduction to APL for complete newcomers
- A cheat sheet or reference card — a well-designed, printable or digital quick reference for APL primitives
Have an idea you'd like to see built?
If you have a project idea but don’t want to build it yourself, share it here and we’ll add it to the list for others to pick up. A sentence or two is enough. Note that submitted ideas become part of the public list – you won’t retain rights to them.
All you need to enter is a free Dyalog licence. If you’re just getting started, we have tutorials, samples, and a community help channel (the APL Orchard) where experienced APLers are happy to answer questions. We’re also available directly – drop us a line at forge@dyalog.com and we’ll point you in the right direction.
One of our 2026 winners discovered APL just months before entering. You could too.
